When you hear that you can manifest your dreams, what comes to mind? What do you want to do, be or have?
Do you know what to do to make that happen? One of the things you can do is to listen to what others are telling you and what you are telling yourself.
Our culture leaves a trail of what it is pouring into our heads through what is recorded as trending on social media. It’s updated continually so that you can always be up-to-date with what’s important to others in our communities. Trouble is that there are so many messages about what matters. Yesterday, I took a sampling from Buzzfeed, Google, Twitter and Facebook. Today, just to make sure I was up-to-date for this article, I revisited the same sites. There were no repeats. Nothing specifically trending yesterday made the list today.
If you pull back to observe generalities, sports and the unusual dominated in the past two days. My takeaway is that we are incredibly bored and always looking for something else to distract us.
Does that help us manifest our dreams? Probably not. Achieving a dream requires the ability to concentrate and focus long enough to gain some expertise on a subject.
And there is another problem here. All these random thoughts (especially negative thoughts) are absorbed through our senses into the conscious mind and stored in the subconscious mind where they influence our reactions to life events. We may tell ourselves we want to achieve a goal, yet find ourselves blocked at every turn by an inner dialogue made up of a litany of protective questions or critiques.
How many times have you discussed a goal you would like to achieve? How often do you hear back thoughts like: “I don’t have the time.” “I don’t have the money.” “I don’t have the knowledge.” “It’s too risky.” “It’ll never work.” All the excuses and rationalizations pile up and our thinking shuts us down.
However, when we really want something, are passionate, and want to get past a negative life event and go on to an even better future, there are things we can do to counter the negative influences.
We can correct our thinking using positive self-talk, including affirmations, Afformations, positive questions and possibility questions. We can focus on what supports our goals and makes it all possible. We may have to listen to the thoughts in our heads – the head trash – but we do not have to believe it. We can thank the mind for its suggestions and then make use of one of the most powerful, positive powers of the mind: its role as a universal search engine.
When we pose a question to the mind that begins with “Why” or “What If,” we activate this function in our nonconscious mind. Called the Reticular Activation System by scientists, the RAS scans for resources that answer our questions with solutions. It is responsible for the flood of ideas that come to us while meditating, brainstorming, journaling or just observing.
(Alert: Always frame positive questions in this exercise. The RAS will search for either negative or positive answers depending on the way you frame the question.)
This is only one way that we can help manifest our dreams. There are many others.
